Tryouts
Drill team is based upon military concepts of rank, order, discipline, precision. Leadership is key to success, and leaders arise through LINE OFFICER AND SOCIAL OFFICER TRYOUTS. First and second year Eaglettes may try out in late April for a Lieutenant or Captain position by completing the Line Officer Tryout Process outlined by the Directors. First and second year Eaglettes may try out in late April for a Social Officer (President, Vice President, Treasurer, or Secretary of the organization) position by completing the Social Officer Tryout Process outlined by the Directors. The processes include the creation of elaborate notebooks as well as presentations or performances before the team and judges. Line Officers serve as leaders of squads within the team. As highest ranking members, they direct practices, choreograph dances, and are responsible for order and motivation of the team. Social Officers, or Sofers, are responsible for team development, unity and spirit. In this role, Sofers do such things as plan outings, end of year Banquet, Homecoming Dance decorations and decorate lockers and make gifts and awards for the team members.
Hairspray, bobby pins, red lipstick, indistinct black dance clothing, a bold 8 ½ x 11 number pinned to your chest and anxious, excited dance hopefuls …. It must be EAGLETTE TRYOUTS!
Girls spend an intense December week learning the tryout routine daily after school. The week of hard work builds to a Thursday evening practice try-out in front on the directors for last minute critiquing. Friday finally arrives with tryouts in front of outside judges. After all the judges and directors vacate the building, the girls wait nervously in front of the big gym for the posting of the ominous list of numbers representing the team for the next school year.
First year Eaglettes and prospective new dancers try out. New dancers who make the team are considered Rookies until Eaglette Banquet in May. Third year members are exempt from the tryout process.
